Nine years ago, Stena Germanica became the world’s first methanol-powered ferry. Now it’s time for the two superfast vessels on the route between Cairnryan in Scotland and Belfast in Northern Ireland to be converted and adapted for a fossil free future.
“This is a way of modifying our existing tonnage and enhancing their energy efficiency.Planning and building new ships takes years and these are actions that we can take now. We must work with what we have alongside with planning for new ships. It aligns with our strategy to act now to win tomorrow”, says Dennis Tetzlaff, Chief Operating Officer Fleet at Stena Line.
The engines of the Superfast VII and VIII are of a similar type to those of Stena Germanica which was converted in 2015. By using the knowledge and experience from the Stena Germanica retrofitting, we can modify the Superfast vessels effectively and efficiently. The retrofitting will take place during late 2025 and early 2026 and replacement ships will be provided for the route as per our normal refit procedure.
