Sustainability
With insetting, participating freight companies can claim the emissions we save by using biofuel in our vessels as a reduction in emissions from their supply chain – helping to reduce their indirect (Scope 3) emissions and overall carbon footprint.
Partnering to drive down fuel emissions
“Shipping is part of freight companies’ supply chains, so when we reduce our Scope 1 emissions, we’re also contributing to fewer Scope 3 emissions for them,” explains Emelie Åström, Group Manager Commercial Strategic Development, who is leading the project.
“Insetting is a way to help them verify and claim that reduction. It’s a win-win for us and our partners. It also creates an incentive to drive up use of biofuels and drive down emissions, so the biggest beneficiary is the environment.”
A certified and audited process
Insetting is similar to offsetting, but instead of compensating for emissions through external projects such as tree planting, companies can claim carbon reductions in their supply chains to reduce their carbon footprint.
Customers can buy “insets”, which can be linked to the route and vessel they use, or indirectly to any use of biofuels across the Stena Line fleet. We bunker these biofuels and document and certify the insets and emissions saved. This is verified and audited independently, so customers can prove the reduction in their sustainability reporting.
Helping decarbonise the supply chain
Insetting was first piloted with the Stena Jutlandica on the Gothenburg-Frederikshavn route, which uses a mix of 20% biodiesel and 80% conventional fuels. The collaborative project is supported by Stena Oil who are helping us source the biofuels and Stena Teknik, who provide technical advice
In the future, we plan to expand the service and develop insetting partnerships with companies further up the supply chain, including manufacturers.
